It's the quarterly review. The release shipped two weeks late, and someone asks the obvious question: where did the time go? It sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
You open the dashboard. It shows how many issues closed, a burndown, a velocity chart. All correct. None of it says the work sat in Code Review for a week, then waited on QA for another.
The good news: the answer is already in your Jira history. You just need to bring it to your reports. In this post, we'll show how Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira brings Time in Status data into Power BI, eazyBI, Excel, and Google Sheets, and what your team gains from it. By the end, "where did the time go?" gets a clear answer in the report people already open.
Why Is Jira Time in Status Missing From Reports?
Because Jira fields show an issue as it is right now, not how long it spent in each stage. You see its status, assignee, and key dates. You don't see that it spent six days in Code Review and three more in Waiting for QA. That information is in the issue history, where Jira records every status change with a timestamp.
But the history is a list of moves, not durations. To turn it into time in each status, you have to pair each move with the next one, count repeat visits, and decide whether weekends and holidays count. A BI team can build that logic, but it takes time to build and keep right. Timepiece already does it, so you get the durations without the extra work.
What Do You Get From Timepiece Integrations?
You get finished numbers instead of raw history. Timepiece calculates the durations, and your tool pulls them through the Timepiece REST API.
The numbers match Timepiece in Jira. The REST API returns the same data as the Timepiece reporting screen, and its parameters mirror the on-screen settings. With the same settings, your dashboard shows what your team sees in Timepiece. You can also save a report as a parameter set and reference it in your REST requests, so you don't have to rebuild the settings.
The REST API supports every report type. That includes Status Duration, Duration Between Statuses (for Cycle Time and Lead Time), Transition Count and Status Count, Assignee and Group Duration, Any Field Duration, SLA reports, and reports split by day, week, month, quarter, or year.
Working hours are respected. Durations can follow a custom calendar that excludes non-working hours, non-working days, and holidays, or a 7/24 calendar.
Jira data sits next to everything else. Workflow metrics join the data your organization already reports on.
How Do Power BI, eazyBI, Excel, and Google Sheets Compare?
All four pull Timepiece data through the Timepiece REST API, and all four need a Timepiece API token. They differ in how you set them up and how the data refreshes.

How Does Timepiece Work With Power BI?
Through a custom M query that OBSS provides. You run it in Power BI Desktop, and it loads Timepiece report data into a Power BI table that you can use for dashboards and charts.

How Does Timepiece Work With eazyBI?
Through eazyBI's REST API data source. You map Timepiece data to eazyBI dimensions and measures, such as project and issue type, and then analyze status durations by them. You can run the import yourself or schedule it. OBSS also provides a data source definition you can import as a starting point.

How Does Timepiece Work With Excel and Google Sheets?
In two ways: file exports and sample files you can refresh. Any Timepiece report exports to XLS, XLSX, or CSV. XLS and XLSX exports can include separate average, sum, median, and standard deviation sheets, grouped by fields you choose. For data you want to refresh, OBSS provides sample Excel and Google Sheets files with built-in scripts. Build your pivot tables and charts on top, then click RUN to get fresh data.
Pro Tip: Values export in the format shown on screen, so pick Days or Hours as the view format if you plan to calculate with them.
How Do Teams Use Jira Time in Status Data?
Each role uses it to answer a different question.
How Do Project Managers Find Bottlenecks in Jira?
With the Status Duration report, which shows how long work spends in each status. Add Duration Between Statuses to track Cycle Time and Lead Time, and time-period reports with Average to see if each stage is getting faster or slower.
How Do Scrum Masters Use It in Sprint Retrospectives?
They filter reports by sprint and bring numbers instead of memories. Transition Count shows how many times each transition happened; for example, how often work moved from QA back to In Progress. Status Count shows how many times issues entered each status, which helps spot rework and reopens.
How Do Engineering Leads Measure Flow Without Micromanaging?
They focus on the process. "Code Review takes four days on average" is about the system, not a person. For workload questions, Group Duration shows how long issues stayed assigned to a Jira group (such as Level 2 Support) rather than to individuals.
How Much Setup Does It Take?
Not much. Each integration needs a Timepiece API token and a report definition. Build the report in Timepiece first, then reuse its settings. Each setup is documented step by step:
If nobody outside your team needs the data, you may not need any of this. Timepiece has its own charts, dashboard gadgets, and scheduled reports inside Jira.
FAQ
Do I Need a Separate Power BI Connector for Jira?
Not to bring Timepiece data into Power BI. OBSS provides a custom query that pulls data from the Timepiece REST API into Power BI Desktop. You add your API token, set your JQL, and run it.
How Do I Export Jira to Excel With Time in Status Data?
You have two options. For a one-time export, download any Timepiece report as an XLS, XLSX, or CSV file. For data you want to refresh, use the sample Excel file from OBSS and click RUN. The sample file needs Excel installed on your computer. It won't work in Excel for the web.
Can I Connect Jira to Google Sheets?
Yes, for Timepiece data. Make a copy of the sample Google Sheets file, fill in the report parameters, paste your API token, and click RUN. The first time you run it, Google asks you to allow the script.
Does Timepiece Work With eazyBI?
Yes. eazyBI pulls Timepiece data through its REST API data source, and you map it to eazyBI dimensions and measures. You can run the import yourself or on a schedule. OBSS also provides a ready-made data source definition to start from.
Can I Send Cycle Time and Lead Time to Power BI?
Yes. Use the Duration Between Statuses report type to define each metric, such as from first In Progress to Done. A report can define up to 10 metrics.
Will Power BI Show the Same Numbers as Timepiece?
Yes, if you use the same report settings. The REST API returns the same data as the Timepiece reporting screen. Saving your report as a parameter set and referencing it in your requests helps keep them in sync. Values for unfinished issues are measured up to the moment a report runs, so they change each time you refresh.
Do I Need Jira Admin Rights to Set This Up?
Not for the API itself. Any user with Timepiece access can create their own API token and pull reports, limited to what they can already see in Jira. A Jira admin decides who can access Timepiece and who can download report files. Custom calendars are admin-only too.
