Most of us use Jira to track what is happening right now. And that is a huge percentage of the daily work. But sometimes, we need to find out what happened in the past. If your manager asks what your backlog looked like last month, you probably don't have a quick answer.

Native Jira search (JQL) shows the current state of your tickets. It doesn't show you a snapshot of every field from a specific day. You can't just scroll back to see old values for story points or custom fields. Most teams end up manually exporting data to Excel just to keep track.

We’ve developed Historian - History Explorer for Jira’s new ‘Historic Query’ feature to give you a more powerful solution. It lets you run any JQL query and see exactly what the results and field values looked like at a specific point in the past.

With Historic Query you can :

  • Effortlessly audit what your issue data looked like and which issues existed on any given date.
  • Track granular changes using clickable badges that reveal the exact history of any field, showing exactly how many times it changed, who updated it, and the "From" and "To" values.
  • Use an interactive slider to instantly jump between specific update dates and watch how your project evolved.

How Historic Query Works

We added the Historic Query feature to Historian to help you see the data you need without the manual work. Here is what it can do:

Choose a specific moment: After entering your standard JQL to identify the issues you want to analyze, use the "Show me the results as of" filter to pick a date and a precise time. The report will be updated to show your issues exactly as they looked at that moment.

Track change frequency: You’ll see small numbers next to your data. These are change badges. Badges on the left show changes made before your chosen date, and a badges on the right show changes that happened after.

Navigate the timeline: If you open the change details, you’ll see a timeline with dots representing each update. You can click a dot and hit "Apply" to instantly refresh the entire report to that specific version.

Pick your fields: You can choose exactly which system or custom fields to display in your report. If you don't pick any, it defaults to the most important ones like Status and Assignee.

Export for audits: Once you have the data you need, you can save it as an Excel or CSV file in one click.

Why This Matters for Your Team

This feature is designed for anyone who needs to answer for the past. It simplifies a few major tasks:

Passing Audits with Less Stress

If you're working toward SOC 2 or ISO 27001, you have to prove who was assigned to a task or when a change was approved. Instead of digging through issues one by one, you can export a full, filterable log for your auditors. This gives you an accurate evidence trail and keeps your project accountable.

Running Better Retrospectives

It is hard to improve your process if you can’t remember where things started. You can pull up your project exactly as it looked on day one of a sprint to see how the work actually moved. This gives you the clarity you need to discuss what really happened during your planning meetings.

Find the Root Cause Without the Guesswork

When a bug happens, you need to see the requirements as they were when the work started. This view lets you see the original descriptions or priorities before they were overwritten, which helps you find the root cause of an issue faster.

We want to make it easy to find any update in seconds. You can find Historian - History Explorer for Jira on the Atlassian Marketplace. It helps you keep an honest, clear record of your project history.

About Historian

Historian makes the Jira history log much easier to read. It transforms the standard wall of text into a clean report, allowing you to filter and group every update. You can track any field, including custom ones, across your entire project. It also lets you switch between seeing the history of a single task or tracking specific field changes across multiple issues. Additionally, the Compare Dates feature allows you to view a work item at two different times, making it easy to see exactly what has evolved.

To learn more about Historian, visit its Atlassian Marketplace page. You can also visit the official Historian documentation page or book an online demo meeting.
